Keyboard Shortcuts for Microsoft Windows

The following table shows the keyboard shortcuts or combinations of keys that provide an alternative way to do something that you'd typically do with a mouse, or to perform a function for which there is no other facility.

Alt + Left Arrow Key (Left Arrow) Go back.
Alt + Right Arrow Key (Right Arrow) Go forward.
Alt + Enter In MS Excel is used to insert a line break within a cell, otherwise displays properties for the selected item.
Alt + Esc Cycle through items in the order in which they were opened.
Alt + F4 or (Alt + Fn + F4) Close the active item, or exit the active application.
Alt + F8 or (Alt + Fn + F8) Show your password on the sign-in screen.
Alt + Page Down Move down one screen.
Alt + Page Up Move up one screen.
Alt + Print Screen or Prt Scn Saves the current window contents to the copy buffer.
In Windows 10 and 11 it opens a OneDrive folder unless Windows Logo Key or Ctrl is also held down.
Alt + Spacebar Open the shortcut menu for the active window.
Alt + Tab Switch between open applications.
Alt + underlined letter Perform the command for that letter.
Ctrl + F4 or (Ctrl + Fn + F4) Close the active document
(in apps that are full-screen and let you have multiple
documents open at the same time).
Ctrl + F5 or (Ctrl + Fn + F5) Force refresh the active window (including all cached references).
Ctrl + F6 or (Ctrl + Fn + F6) MS Word: Goes to the next open document window.
Ctrl + A Select all items in a document or window.
Ctrl + Alt + Tab Use the cursor keys to switch between all open applications.
Ctrl + C (or Ctrl + Insert) Copy the selected item.
Ctrl + Down Arrow Key (Down Arrow) Move the cursor to the beginning of the next paragraph.
Ctrl + Left Arrow Key (Left Arrow) Move the cursor to the beginning of the previous word.
Ctrl + Right Arrow Key (Right Arrow) Move the cursor to the beginning of the next word.
Ctrl + Up Arrow Key (Up Arrow) Move the cursor to the beginning of the previous paragraph.
Ctrl + D (or Delete) Delete the selected item and move it to the Recycle Bin.
Ctrl + F Most applications: Brings up Find requestor to find specified text.
Ctrl + G MS Word: Brings up a Page requestor to Goto specific page.
Ctrl + H MS Word: Displays Find and Replace dilaog.
Web Browsers: Displays recent browsing History.
Ctrl + J MS Word: Centre Justify text.
Web Browser: Display Download History.
Ctrl + L MS Word: Left Justify text.
Ctrl + N File Explorer: Open a new File Explorer window with the same folder path as the current window.
Ctrl + P Opens the Application Print dialog.
This is the same as selecting Print icon or menu item.
NOTE: When used from Edge or Chrome, output may be monochrome even when color is specified.
Ctrl + Shift + P Opens the System Print dialog.
When used from Edge or Chrome, output is color when color is specified.
Ctrl + R MS Word: Right-Justify text.
Web Browser: Refresh the active window.
Ctrl + Shift + R Web Browser: Force refresh the active window (including all cached references).
Ctrl + T Opens a new tab on your web browser.
Ctrl + V (or Shift + Insert) Paste the selected item.
Ctrl + X Cut the selected item.
Ctrl + Y Redo an action.
Ctrl + Z Undo an action.
Ctrl + Shift + Spacebar Types a non-breaking space between words such that both words always display on the same line.
In MS Word (and some other apps) it displays as '°' when paragraph marks are showing.
Ctrl + Home MS Word: Jumps to top of document.
Ctrl + End MS Word: Jumps to bottom of document.
Ctrl + Page Down MS Word: Jumps to the top of the next page.
Ctrl + Page Up MS Word: Jumps to the top of the previous page.
F1 or (Fn + F1) Help.
If Fn key required, F1 will Mute sound when Fn not used.
F2 or (Fn + F2) Rename the selected item.
If Fn key required, F2 will Decrease sound when Fn not used.
F3 or (Fn + F3) Search for a file or folder in File Explorer.
If Fn key required, F3 will Increase sound when Fn not used.
F4 or (Fn + F4) Display the address bar list in File Explorer.
If Fn key required, F4 will Decrease brightness when Fn not used.
F5 or (Fn + F5) Refresh the active window.
In MS Word it brings up page requestor to Goto specific page.
If Fn key required, F5 will Increase brightness when Fn not used.
F6 or (Fn + F6) Cycle through screen elements in a window or on the desktop.
F7 or (Fn + F7) (Application dependent).
F8 or (Fn + F8) (Application dependent).
F9 or (Fn + F9) (Application dependent).
F10 or (Fn + F10) Activate the Menu bar in the active application.
F11 or (Fn + F11) (Application dependent).
F12 or (Fn + F12) (Application dependent).
Windows Logo Key (Windows logo key) Open or close Start.
Windows Logo Key + A Open Action center.
Windows Logo Key + B Set focus in the notification area.
Windows Logo Key + C Open Microsoft Copilot.
Windows Logo Key + D Display and hide the desktop.
Windows Logo Key + Alt + D Display and hide the date and time on the desktop.
Windows Logo Key + E Open File Explorer.
Windows Logo Key + F Open Feedback Hub and take a screenshot.
Windows Logo Key + Ctrl + F Search for PCs (but only if you're on a managed network).
Windows Logo Key + G Open Game bar when a game is open.
Windows Logo Key + H Open the Share sidebar.
Windows Logo Key + I Open Settings menu.
Windows Logo Key + J Set focus to a Windows tip when one is available.
(When a Windows tip appears, bring focus to the Tip. Pressing the keyboard shortcuts again to bring focus to the element on the screen to which the Windows tip is anchored.)

Windows Logo Key + M Minimize all windows.
Windows Logo Key + Shift + M Restore minimized windows on the desktop.

Windows Logo Key + R Open the Run dialog box.

Windows Logo Key + T Cycle through apps on the taskbar.

Windows Logo Key + V Open the Clipboard (if activated).

Windows Logo Key + Shift + V Cycle through notifications in reverse order.
Windows Logo Key + X Open the Quick Link menu.
Windows Logo Key + Y Switch input between Windows Mixed Reality and your desktop.

Windows Logo Key + number Open the desktop and start the app pinned to the taskbar in the position indicated by the number. If the app is already running, switch to that app.
Windows Logo Key + Alt + number Open the desktop and open the Jump List for the app pinned to the taskbar in the position indicated by the number.
Windows Logo Key + Ctrl + number Open the desktop and switch to the last active window of the app pinned to the taskbar in the position indicated by the number.
Windows Logo Key + Ctrl + Shift + B Used to force a refresh of the video/display adapter if screen is black.
Windows Logo Key + Ctrl + Shift + number Open the desktop and open a new instance of the app located at the given position on the taskbar as an administrator.
Windows Logo Key + Shift + number Open the desktop and start a new instance of the app pinned to the taskbar in the position indicated by the number.
Windows Logo Key + Down Arrow Key (Down Arrow) Remove current app from screen or minimize the desktop window.
Windows Logo Key + Shift + Down Arrow Key (Down Arrow) Restore/minimize active desktop windows vertically, maintaining width.
Windows Logo Key + Left Arrow Key (Left Arrow) Maximize the app or desktop window to the left side of the screen.
Windows Logo Key + Shift + Left Arrow Key (Left Arrow) Move an app or window in the desktop from one monitor to another.
Windows Logo Key + Right Arrow Key (Right Arrow) Maximize the app or desktop window to the right side of the screen.
Windows Logo Key + Shift + Right Arrow Key (Right Arrow) Move an app or window in the desktop from one monitor to another.
Windows Logo Key + Up Arrow Key (Up Arrow) Maximize the window.
Windows Logo Key + Shift + Up Arrow Key (Up Arrow) Stretch the desktop window to the top and bottom of the screen.
Windows Logo Key + Esc Exit magnifier.
Windows Logo Key + Home Minimize all except the active desktop window (restores all windows on second stroke).
Windows Logo Key + Pause/Break Display the System Properties dialog box.
Use Windows Logo Key + [Fn] + P when no Pause/Break on keyboard.
Windows Logo Key + Tab Open Task view.
Windows Logo Key + Comma(,) Temporarily peek at the desktop.
Windows Logo Key + Forward slash(/) Begin IME reconversion.
Windows Logo Key + Period(.) Open emoji panel.
Windows Logo Key + Semicolon(;) Open emoji panel.
Windows Logo Key + Spacebar Switch input language and keyboard layout.
Windows Logo Key + Ctrl + Spacebar Change to a previously selected input.
Windows Logo Key + Ctrl + Enter Open Narrator.

Open "how to get help in windows" Bing search in default browser.
Windows Logo Key + [Fn] + Spacebar Saves the current screen contents to the copy buffer.
This option can be used when you don't have a Print Screen or Prt Scn key.
Windows Logo Key + [Fn] + B Break key when your keyboard doesn't have one.
Windows Logo Key + [Fn] + P Pause key when your keyboard doesn't have one.
Page Down MS Word: Jumps to bottom of current screen.
Page Up MS Word: Jumps the top of the current screen to the bottom.
Print Screen or Prt Scn Saves the current screen contents to the copy buffer.
In Windows 10 and 11 it opens a OneDrive folder unless Windows Logo Key or Ctrl is also held down.
Shift + Delete Delete selected item permanently (skip the Recycle Bin).
Shift + Enter Inserts a line break within a paragraph.
In MS Word (and some other apps) it displays as 'New Line' when paragraph marks are showing.
