Composition 4 - Leading Lines

It doesn't matter what sort of camera you use, but following a few simple guidelines can generally improve your photos. In this tip we will talk about "Leading Lines".

Leading lines refers to a technique of composition where the viewer of your photos attention is drawn to lines that lead to the main subject of the image.

A leading line paves an easy path for the eye to follow through different elements of a photo. They often start at the bottom of the frame and guide the eye upwards and inwards, from the foreground of the image to the background, typically leading toward the main subject, or in many instances into infinity.

Leading Lines
But that is not the only way, because leading lines can work in any direction or even go in circles if that is appropriate.

It is also important to point out the opposite can also be true. If your image contains distracting or multiple conflicting lines, it can make it difficult to identify what the subject of your image is, as shown in our example here.

Confusing Lines
If you would like to see some examples, type "leading lines photography" into Google Search and click on Images or simply click here. This provides a much wider range of images than we could show here.
