Editing 2 - Cropping, Aspect Ratios, Flipping and Rotation

Unless you are using a high-end camera with a selection of interchangeable lenses, whenever you take a photo it will probably be a compromise. As long as the focus is correct, and the exposure is acceptable, the photo can generally be improved by editing, and this includes cropping.
There are numerous reasons why you might want to crop a photo, change the aspect ratio, or reposition the subject within the photo:
  • Remove unwanted content and focus on the subject.
  • Improve composition – Rule of Thirds helps here.
  • Add impact by using different aspect ratios.
  • Use a different shape entirely, such as a circle, oval or triangle, etc.
  • Cropping for emotion to accentuate a scene or situation.
  • Cropping for a story, often to provide context.
  • Flip or rotate the subject to give a different perspective.
Take care not to accidentally overwrite your original photo when you save your changes.
