Composition 7 - Filling the Frame

It doesn't matter what sort of camera you use, but following a few simple guidelines can generally improve your photos. In this tip we will talk about "Filling the Frame".

Filling the Frame refers to a technique of composition where the subject completely fills the frame, and maybe more, such that there is nothing else to focus on.

In its simplest form, matching the camera angle (i.e. using landscape or portrait) to match the subject is the first step. In many cases, avoiding other foreground objects can also be a factor.

In essence you are attempting highlight details that might not be readily seen, to produce what might be considered a close-up shot, without it necessarily being one.

Filling the Frame
This style of composition can often be achieved by cropping a larger image using your computer, but you must be careful as this will effectively reduce the resolution and could lessen the effect.

If you would like to see some examples, type "filling the frame photography" into Google Search and click on Images or simply click here. This provides a much wider range of images than we could show here.
